Intro
Welcome back. I’m Jon and this is SL Selects, the weekly newsletter from Second Lake.
We’ve got a great guest profile in store today. Answering our SL Qs is the one and only, @junyar.pdf. I came across Junyar early on in 2022 and got to know them through a mutual interest in all things JJJJound. We talked shop on older JJJJ projects, potential upcoming projects, product quality, you name it. It was through those conversations I learned more about Junyar and their interests. Since the inception of the SLS, I knew I had to bring them onto the newsletter. Excited for this one.
Without further ado, let’s get into it!
Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi, my name is Junyar. I was born and raised in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). I grew up skateboarding in the mid 90s which I feel influenced my taste in art, music and fashion to this day. I work in the broadcasting, film/post production industry and love being behind the scenes as opposed to being in the spotlight.
What’s one place everyone should visit?
Everyone should visit a place that brings them mental peace. I’m talking mindfulness practices like breathing exercises, walking, being present, practicing gratitude, etc.
What’s one essential clothing item for you and why?
I love clothes with lots of pockets, which makes the Carhartt WIP Regular Cargo pant ideal for what I need. It has plenty of room in the thighs, adjustable cuffs for me to style with any footwear, and enough side pockets for me to carry more junk in comfort.
What’s one essential non-clothing item for you and why?
Engineered Garments UL Backpack.
The Engineered Garments UL Backpack is my ideal accessory when traveling. It’s lightweight and durable with enough room for me to pack my essentials in the main compartment. Plus, I can stash a 32oz Nalgene on each side.
What footwear would be in your top 3 of all time?
1995 Duffs KCK (Kareem Campbell Kicks)
My favorite skate shoe of all time.
The Gel Kayano 14 is by far the most comfortable shoe I own. ASICS and JJJJound have designed two ideal colorways that my wife and I love.
Salomon Shelter CSWP Winter Boot
This is my favorite winter boot. It’s lightweight stylish and deceptively warm. I would love to design a pair.
Any personal grails?
JJJJound New Balance 990v3 Grey
Rolex Day-Date President Gold 36mm
I’ve always admired this piece! Tony Soprano wore it well.
Louis Vuitton Millionaire Sunglasses (Marc Jacobs x Pharrell x Nigo)
I’ve loved these since they first came out in 2005. They’re a little too gaudy for my taste these days, but I would still love a pair to keep on display.
Current fragrance? If any.
I have 2 favorites.
Terre D’Hermès during the Spring & Summer and Versace Eau Fraiche during the Fall & Winter.
Tell us an underrated brand or person you enjoy.
I’ve been amazed by his work since 2008. A true artist, designer, writer, painter.
He’s a “1 of 1” Toronto Legend.
Guilty pleasure?
Music. If someone pulled up beside me in traffic, they might be surprised at what I would be listening to. I mostly listened to hip hop then, but skateboarding in the mid 90s introduced me to a lot of different genres of music. During that time, I would sift through skate magazines and discover ads for different albums like NOFX’s Punk in Drublic or Rancid’s Let’s Go and wonder what they sounded like. Even some of my favorite skate videos introduced me to songs like “Take 5” by David Brubeck, “But It’s Alright” by J.J. Jackson, “Hallowed Be Thy Name” by Iron Maiden, “Over the Hills and Far Away” by Led Zeppelin, and “White Room” by Cream.
Favorite song or record?
Westside Gunn - The Steiners ft. Elzhi.
I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of this song.
Elzhi went off on this.
Coffee or tea?
Tea. Chamomile, Peppermint, Turmeric or Green.
Pencil or pen?
Pencil. I make a lot of mistakes.
Reality or fiction?
Reality always wins.
Anything you’d like to plug, go ahead. The floor is yours.
Thanks for having me Jon! This was really cool.
